5 Tips for Picking the Right Smartphone

Smartphones are supposed to make our lives easier. With the right smartphone you can manage e-mails and appointments, get directions, keep track of your workouts and what you eat, shop, share information with friends, listen to music and watch movies. So why is finding the right smartphone so darn confusing?
Lots of people feel stupid when picking a smartphone. Which is the best platform, Android or iPhone? How can you find the best deal on the phone you want when not every cell phone carrier sells or works with all models? How can you avoid paying for minutes or data plans you never use? How can you avoid overage charges? Which phones have features worth skipping and which features are must haves? Do you even need a smartphone or will a regular mobile phone do?
Smartphones aren't cheap (and neither are the plans they sometimes require), so taking the time to do a little research first and figuring out exactly what you need, want, and can do without, is worth it. We'll show you how to narrow down your options, find the right phone, carrier and plan for you so you end up with the right smartphone -- and maybe even some money left in your pocket. With these five tips for picking the right smartphone, you'll be leaving the cell phone store with the right phone and feeling downright...well, smart.

This seems like a pretty silly statement, but the first step in picking the right smartphone is to make sure you actually need one. Smartphones are expensive, and so are the coverage plans they require. It's easy to use more data than your plan allows and wind up with expensive overage charges. Even if you don't go over, you could end up paying for a data plan that you barely use.
So, how do you know if you need a smartphone? Look at how you use your current cell phone. Maybe you only use your phone for talking and the occasional text message. If you already have a GPS system and an MP3 player, you can make do with a regular phone that doesn't offer music or directions. You might not want e-mail on your phone. Getting a smartphone often means having immediate access to work e-mails, social media and the Web. Not everyone wants to be that connected.
On the other hand, think about how you'd like to use your phone. If you hate feeling like you're missing out on the latest tweets, updates from your friends, and news, then a smartphone will probably seem worth it to you. If your job requires you to be connected all the time, providing immediate responses to e-mails and questions, a smartphone makes sense. You may already have an MP3 player and GPS, but having all those features in one handy device can make life easier and less cluttered. Finally, if your lifestyle has a long commute on public transportation, or if you often have a lot of downtime when you're in public, a smartphone can help you pass the time.
Cell phone companies are almost as confusing as the phones they offer. They each have different plans, work with different phone manufacturers and have differing levels of service and coverage. You also have to decide if you're willing to pay as you go with a smartphone, or if you want to be locked into a contract. Having a contract can save you some money, but it means sticking with that cell phone company for years. If you choose the wrong company or plan and sign a contract, you're stuck.
To find the right cell phone company, check out which company has the best coverage where you live. Having a great smartphone is meaningless if you can't connect to the Web or are constantly dropping calls. Look at the coverage maps available at any cell phone carrier's website. In addition to making sure the area you're in has good coverage, make sure the network you want is available in your area. Smartphones tend to work best on the faster 3G and 4G networks. If only a slower network is available in your area, you'll probably want to find another carrier to get the best out of your phone. You should also make sure coverage is good in areas where you frequently travel.
Also check out consumer reviews of the coverage offered by various networks in your area. A cell phone company may have a network in place where you live, but the actual users are the ones that will let you know how strong the signal tends to be, and if calls get dropped. If a carrier seems to have great coverage in your area but actual customers say otherwise, take your business somewhere else. You'll also want to compare the various prices and plans offered by the carriers in your area. Finding the best combination of price and plan is critical for our next tip. Keep reading to find out what it is.
When you're deciding how much to spend on a smartphone you have two costs to consider: the price of the phone and the price of the plan. The price of the phone is a one-time expense. Cell phone companies also tend to offer lots of promotions and discounts, so the phone you want may be cheaper than you think. In some cases, if you sign up for a certain plan, the phone is free. Before setting your heart on a certain phone, make sure its price is in-line with your budget.
In most cases, your smartphone plan will be a bigger expense than your phone. Let's say you had to have a certain phone and you were OK with paying $600 for it with no discounts. The plan for that phone could run for two years, at over $100 a month. You could end up paying four times as much for the plan than the phone.
Before shelling out all that cash each month, think about how you want to use your phone. If you plan using mainly it for talking and texting, with only a little bit of e-mail or web surfing, see if you can find a plan with less data. If you're constantly online and want to download apps, games and movies, you'll want to spring for more data. Other parts of the plan to consider include if unused data, text and talking minutes roll over from month to month, or what the penalty for breaking the contract is. If, for example, you move out of the cell phone carrier's coverage area, you don't want to have to pay hundreds of dollars just to get out of your contract.
For a lot of people, picking the right smartphone is a matter of picking the right operating system. The smartphone's operating system is the platform it uses to run various programs. While they can all pretty much connect you to the Web, e-mail, phone calls and texts, each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Four of the most common operating systems for smartphones today are Apple's iOS, which runs iPhones, Google's Android system, Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Research in Motion's Blackberry OS. Unless you're a technophile, you may not notice differences in how each of these systems operate. What you will notice, however, is the availability of different programs and apps across various platforms.
If you plan on using a lot of apps on your smartphone, you might want to avoid getting a Blackberry. The Blackberry OS is great for using e-mail and Web browsing, but it doesn't have as many apps as other browsers. If you want a lot of apps, an iPhone is your best bet. The Apple app store is the largest in the world. The downside of Apple OS is that it's only available on Apple's iPhones. Android-powered phones are quickly making up ground against Apple where apps are concerned, and the Android operating system is available on a range of phones, making it easier to find one that fits your life exactly. A Windows mobile phone is good to get if you plan on doing a lot of work on your phone. Since it runs a mobile version of Windows, which you may already have running on your computer, it can easily let you see and work on spreadsheets and documents right on your phone.
If you follow these tips, your next smartphone won't be just smart -- it'll be a genius.

Once you've decided on your phone budget, operating system, carrier and plan, you've got one task left: deciding on a phone. Take your time on this. You may end having the phone for two years, taking it everywhere with you and using it more than any other appliance. You need to make sure the actual phone suits your life.
Check out all the phones the carrier you're going with has in your price range and with the operating system you want. Think about the tasks your planning on using your phone for, and try them out on the demonstration phones in the store. See if the key board is comfortable, and how easy it is to switch between applications. If the phone has a trackball or touchscreen, see if it's easy to use or if you're constantly clicking on the wrong thing. Make sure the phone will fit comfortably in your hand, as well as your pocket or purse. Also make sure you like the look of the phone -- after all, it's going to be your constant accessory. Put the phone to your ear and make sure that's comfortable as well. If you know people who have a phone you're interested in, ask them about it. Also read user reviews online to see if the phone has issues like getting hot after prolonged use, or breaking easily.

Will a 2gb RAM good enough for normal day to day usage of laptops?
Really depends how you define "normal day to day usage" and whether you can find a workaround to whatever you can't do. My normal usage involves visual studio and virtual machines which would probably have a tough time with only 2gb to work with (if not impossible for virtual machines).
My laptop broke a couple weeks ago and i've been using a netbook (1gb single core processor with 2gb of ram) borrowed from my sister since. It can't handle most of what I need it to do, but it does run a program called Teamviewer which allows me to remotely control my desktop computer at home that does do everything I need.
Also, can you change the ram in the laptop? Even if there aren't available slots you could possibly remove the ram in it and install bigger sticks (check that the motherboard can handle it first and make sure the ram is compatible).
For basic web browsing and typing word documents and stuff 2gb should be more than enough unless you're the type to have about 15 youtube videos loaded and ready to play and a couple hundred other tabs. Can also use the task manager to see what your normal ram usage is and to try and estimate what you could do with 2gb. Personally, all my google chrome tabs alone add up to over 2gb of ram, but there's probably a couple hundred tabs open, many of which could be closed. Even with 8gb of ram I still often get low memory warnings from windows that I should close some things. I realize that my normal usage is not the same as most other peoples' lol.
Also consider how long you want this laptop to be able to hold it's own. More ram and processing power now means it's less likely to be sitting on a shelf unused in a year or two (assuming it stays working that long and is put on the shelf due to being outdated and too slow for your needs).

What can be easily overlooked is the fact that most of your reading material is only available while you're online. So if you want to read while you're traveling (or just looking to save some battery by turning off your data connection) it's a good idea to make sure the next books on your reading list are downloaded to your tablet. Here's how:
Step 1: Open the Google Books app and find a title you'd like to read while offline.
Step 2: Press and hold on the book's cover and a new menu will pop up.
Step 3: Choose make available offline.

Step 4: Select other titles you want available in offline mode by pressing the small thumbtack under each book's cover.
Step 5: Once finished, press the Done button in the lower right corner.

You can see how much space you have available for downloads during the book selection (shown above). And it's OK to pick all titles, as long as you have the space.

The iPhone camera and the megapixel myth
How many megapixels does your phone camera really need? Not as many as some smartphone manufacturers want you to think.

Around the turn of the millennium when digital cameras were first becoming popular megapixels mattered. The average digital camera back in 1999 had less than 2 megapixels (MP), which wouldn't have been enough pixels if you needed to produce a print ready image that filled an A4 page. A 300 dpi image at A4 size would need to measure 2,480 x 3,508 pixels, which is a total of 8,699,840 pixels, or just over 8MP.
These days some compact cameras boast as many as 16MP, while you can get more than 24MP on an SRL. Phone cameras are also packing in the megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S4 offers a 13MP camera, and the Galaxy S5 will offer a 16MP camera. The Sony Xperia Z2 has a 20.7MP camera. But the camera on Apple's flagship iPhone – the iPhone 5s – only offers 8MP. Does this mean that Apple's iPhone camera is worst than other phone cameras that offer more megapixels? The answer is no, and we're going to explain why.

Dispelling the megapixel myth
It's wrong to think that the more megapixels your sensor has the better your image will be. Of course that doesn't stop various camera phone and camera manufacturers from promoting their products as superior due to the number of megapixels they have packed in. These manufacturers are hoping to fool you into thinking that the number of pixels has something to do with image quality. People like to see a number that indicates whether something is better so many are being taken in by this ruse.
The number of pixels means nothing if the manufacturer has achieved it by cramming them onto a small sensor, as is the case with many modern camera phones. In some cases, in order to achieve more pixels, manufacturers are making those pixels smaller.
A good camera will have the right amount of pixels for the size of the sensor.
It's the size of the pixels that counts
Rather than make the pixels smaller in order to increase the amount of pixels that can be fitted on the sensor, Apple increased pixel size to 1.5µm (from 1.4µm – those measurements are in micrometers) and kept the pixel count the same by using a 15% larger sensor.
As Apple's Phil Schiller said in the keynote announcing the new iPhone 5s: "Bigger pixels equal better picture". Increasing sensor size and pixel size makes a big difference to low light sensitivity and noise.
Why the camera sensor matters
The sensor is what captures the light and converts what you see into an image, it determines image size, resolution, lo-light performance, depth-of-field, dynamic range, and basically how good your photos look.
The sensor is crucial to image quality - it doesn't matter how many pixels you have if the sensor is inferior. The quality of the image depends on the size of sensor, the number of pixels on it and the size of those pixels.
The size of the sensor also affects what gets recorded on the frame. Smaller sensors crop and capture less of the scene than full frame sensors. As a guide a full frame is the same as a 35mm film frame (36×24 mm). Apple's sensor in the iPhone 5s is 15% larger than that in the iPhone 5.
There are various type of sensor. The iPhone features a CMOS sensor (CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide semiconductor). The iPhone camera sensor has been provided by Sony since the iPhone 4s. Some cameras use a CCD image sensor, but CMOS sensors work more efficiently, require less power and handle high-speed burst modes better, which is why they tend to be used in camera phones. The Galaxy S4 also features a CMOS sensor.

Other features in the iPhone 5s camera
As we note above, Apple's flagship iPhone - the iPhone 5s - offers 8MP with each of those measuring 1.5µm pixels, and a larger sensor, but there are other ways in which Apple has improved the camera in the iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 5s has a ƒ/2.2 aperture, this enables it to capture more light than the iPhone 5 (and iPhone 5c camera) with its f/2.4 aperture camera. The combination of this larger image sensor and the larger aperture is a 33% increase in light sensitivity, according to Apple. Because it is more sensitive to light the iPhone 5s can capture brighter images with less noise.
Other improvements that add up to better photos are the Sapphire crystal lens cover; True Tone flash; Backside illumination sensor; Five-element lens; Hybrid IR filter; Autofocus; Tap to focus; and Auto image stabilization.
For example, the True Tone Flash includes an amber light that compensates for white balance and helps you get the best colour temperature for the shot and leads to more realistic skin tones.

When more megapixels are bad
As we've established above, there is no point in having more megapixels in a smartphone if those pixels are small and the sensor is poor, but there are additional reasons why you want to avoid camera phones that boast more megapixels.
The more megapixels in your image the more megabytes of space it will take up. If space is already constrained on your smartphone an image that takes up 5MB will be a problem. To get around this your image might be compressed - which means you are losing that extra 'quality' anyway.
If the image is humongous you will may experience frustration when you try to sharing it on Facebook or another social site it will take longer to upload your picture.
When more megapixels are good
The only time when extra pixels on a smartphone camera might be useful is if you might want to crop in on an image to reveal detail in the distance. The extra megapixels will give you a little extra flexibility when it comes to cropping in on your image.
These extra pixels are even more crucial when the camera zoom is poor. Some compact cameras and all DSLRs have optical zooms, which mean that the focal length of the lens increases. Other compacts, and nearly all smartphones have digital zooms. In that case the camera shoots the photo and them crops it in to create the close up.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 10x optical zoom – thanks to which it looks more like a compact camera that a smartphone.
How many megapixels do you need?
Ken Rockwell explains how to figure out how many megapixels you really need. If you want a super-sharp print you really need to be able to print at 300 DPI (dots per inch). He explains that you can calculate how many pixels you need this way:
Long print dimension in inches = 4 x (square root of megapixels)
Long print dimension in centimeters = 10 x (square root of megapixels)
For example, the square root of four (megapixels) is two. 4 x 2 is 8in. Thus the biggest print you can make without losing sharpness as seen through a magnifier from a 4MP camera is 6 x 8in (15x20cm). From a 16MP camera you could go to 12 x 16in (30x45cm).
Following Rockwell's calculations, this means the 8MP iPhone 5s can give you a [square route of 8 is 2.8284: 10 x 2.8284 = 28.28427] 28cm long, or [4 x 2.8 = 11.3136] 11in long shot.
In comparison, a 13MP phone camera could give you [square route of 13 is 3.6055: 10 x 3.6055 = 36.055] 36cm long, or [4 x 3.6055 = 14.422] 14in long reproduction of your shot.
As a point of comparison, the length of an A4 page is 29.7cm or 11.692in, a tiny bit longer than the 8MP shot, but smaller than the 13MP shot. We think it's unlikely anyone will want to print camera-phone photos out at a size bigger than an A4 sheet so 8MP seems quite adequate. (US letter sized paper is 27.94cm, suggesting that the 8MP shot is ideal for that market).
Basically if you want a 10x8in print 5MP is enough. If you want a 14x11in print (or anything bigger) you'll be ok with 7MP. If you are only going to view images on a computer screen then those images only need to be 1MP.
What will the camera be like in the iPhone 6?
There are various rumours about the next iPhone (you can read all theiPhone 6 rumours here).
With regards to the new iPhone 6 camera Sony is said to be providing the front-facing as well as the rear-facing camera sensors for the next iPhone. Previously the front facing Facetime camera was provided by Omnivision and was just 1.2 megapixels.
As for the rear-facing camera, there are reports suggesting that Apple may add a 10-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture to the next iPhone.

These extra pixels are even more crucial when the camera zoom is poor. Some compact cameras and all DSLRs have optical zooms, which mean that the focal length of the lens increases. Other compacts, and nearly all smartphones have digital zooms. In that case the camera shoots the photo and them crops it in to create the close up.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 10x optical zoom – thanks to which it looks more like a compact camera that a smartphone.
How many megapixels do you need?
Ken Rockwell explains how to figure out how many megapixels you really need. If you want a super-sharp print you really need to be able to print at 300 DPI (dots per inch). He explains that you can calculate how many pixels you need this way:
Long print dimension in inches = 4 x (square root of megapixels)
Long print dimension in centimeters = 10 x (square root of megapixels)
For example, the square root of four (megapixels) is two. 4 x 2 is 8in. Thus the biggest print you can make without losing sharpness as seen through a magnifier from a 4MP camera is 6 x 8in (15x20cm). From a 16MP camera you could go to 12 x 16in (30x45cm).
Following Rockwell's calculations, this means the 8MP iPhone 5s can give you a [square route of 8 is 2.8284: 10 x 2.8284 = 28.28427] 28cm long, or [4 x 2.8 = 11.3136] 11in long shot.
In comparison, a 13MP phone camera could give you [square route of 13 is 3.6055: 10 x 3.6055 = 36.055] 36cm long, or [4 x 3.6055 = 14.422] 14in long reproduction of your shot.
As a point of comparison, the length of an A4 page is 29.7cm or 11.692in, a tiny bit longer than the 8MP shot, but smaller than the 13MP shot. We think it's unlikely anyone will want to print camera-phone photos out at a size bigger than an A4 sheet so 8MP seems quite adequate. (US letter sized paper is 27.94cm, suggesting that the 8MP shot is ideal for that market).
Basically if you want a 10x8in print 5MP is enough. If you want a 14x11in print (or anything bigger) you'll be ok with 7MP. If you are only going to view images on a computer screen then those images only need to be 1MP.
What will the camera be like in the iPhone 6?

With regards to the new iPhone 6 camera Sony is said to be providing the front-facing as well as the rear-facing camera sensors for the next iPhone. Previously the front facing Facetime camera was provided by Omnivision and was just 1.2 megapixels.
As for the rear-facing camera, there are reports suggesting that Apple may add a 10-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture to the next iPhone.

How Much Optical Zoom is Needed?
SUMMARY: Do you require a digital camera with 6x optical zoom, or is 2x or 3x enough?

(Note that this tip was written for users of compact, intermediate, and prosumer digital cameras. Digital SLR users can purchase lenses with different zooming capabilities.)
With the plethora of digital camera choices available, one question you may ask is how much optical zoom do you really need for the types of photos you want to take? Purchasing a digital camera with a greater optical zoom distance is more expensive than one with only a 2x or 3x zoom, so this decision can greatly affect your pocketbook.
While there are no hard and fast rules, consider the following suggestions. Realize that even if you need a lesser zoom for most of your photos, there will always be times where a greater zoom may be useful.
* Are you primarily taking photos of friends and family, such as in parties or social situations? If so, a 2x or 3x zoom should be plenty. Just be sure to get up close if you need to record detail of a situation.
* Looking for photos of outdoor scenery, or interested in taking photos of architectural elements in a cityscape? A 5x+ zoom can help you take pictures from further away without sacrificing detail.
* Interested in taking photos of wildlife where you need to stand back to avoid scaring animals away, at sporting events where you may be situated in third level seating, from atop observation decks in large metropolises, or other situations where it will be difficult to get in close to your subject? That 7x+ zoom may be needed to get the photos you want.
Zoom magnifications differ between cameras. While this tip is written as a guide, if you need specifics, read the mm capabilities of a digital camera's lens. The higher the mm, the greater the telephoto capabilities (zooming in) of a particular lens.
