battery drain
What's killing your battery? Android's top 10 performance-sapping apps
Is your phone or tablet battery constantly reduced to a sliver of red on the screen? New research has found the worst performance-draining apps on Android devices, and Facebook is the biggest culprit.
It may seem to consume every spare moment of our lives, but the world's most famous social networking app is chewing up our mobiles too, with Facebook topping a global list of the most performance-draining Android apps, which considered battery drain, storage consumption and data use.
But it's not just Facebook draining our mobile power -- a raft of other social apps, games and even bloatware are consuming more processing power, battery life and data than many of us realise.
The findings come from new research conducted by AVG which took anonymous data from more than 1 million AVG Android app users in order to collate a list of the worst offenders in the Android app world (measured over Q3 2014, based on apps with more than 1 million Google Play downloads).
Culprits included pre-installed apps pushed out by device manufacturers, with 3 of the 10 biggest battery draining apps that run on start-up coming from Samsung. News apps also warrant a mention, particularly those that update in real-time, with the New York Times' Breaking News app topping the list of the most storage-hungry apps we use.
But with 62 percent of the time we spend on Android tablets or smartphones dedicated to playing games, gaming apps warranted their own top ten. In these stakes, King, the developer behind Candy Crush Saga and other titles in the Saga series, took out the dubious honour of holding 4 of the top 10 spots for performance-draining game apps.
So what should you do if your battery life is dropping faster than all those sugar balls in Candy Crush? AVG recommends turning off app notifications, limiting refresh intervals, deleting your cache of temporary files and limiting the amount of data an app is allowed to download while you're not watching.

termites
Termites? Let’s Get Rid of Them! If you are looking for information on how to get rid of termites, you are probably not going to turn to professionals and want to cope with the problem yourself. And that is quite accomplishable! But you’ll have to go into the issue, be persistent and give up the idea of exterminating the bugs in 10 minutes. None of the insects or other pests is more dangerous than termites. Only they can ruin your house completely. But even if you have them, it’s no reason to panic. They are slow eaters (the average colony eats a pound of wood in 5 years), thus your dwelling won’t collapse tomorrow. Termite extermination takes time and patience. Though it doesn’t mean that you should postpone solving the problem for too long, or else you’ll have nothing to save.

Know Your Enemy’s Face Termites on wood: infestationProper elimination of those little buggers depends on your approach to it, that’s why it is necessary to do everything right. First of all, you’ll have to determine their type (you haven’t expected them to represent only one species, have you?). Track down the place of infestation. To locate their main hideouts, take a flashlight and flat-blade screwdriver, and examine everything made of wood: Tap on pillars, support and floor beams, and, of course, furniture. If you hear a hollow sound, that would mean it may be damaged by termites. Probe suspect wood for strength. If it gives easily or falls apart, this may also be a sign of infestation. Look around for mud in wood and any other mud trails. These insects are known to leave fallen wings and mud trails behind. When you’ve spotted the bugs, try to examine them closely in order to determine their type. Your home is more likely to be infested by termites of two general types: subterranean drywood. The majority of “destroyers” belongs to the subterranean species. And those two are the most destructive to buildings. The percentage of all the populations in the USA looks like this: 10% – drywood, 90% – subterranean.

Drywood Termites Drywood termites damageThis type of insects is found primarily in coastal areas, Southwestern and Southern states (especially in California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas). They don’t need any contact with soil to survive and thrive only in wood. Any cracks, crevices or joints between pieces of wood may become their entrance. Unlike the subterranean, these buggers establish their nests in dry, undecayed wood completely above ground, and damage done by them is entirely different. They excavate large chambers in wood, connect them by small tunnels, eject wood pellets and leave fecal pellets called frass behind.
Subterranean Termites Subterranean termitesSubterranean termites can be found in both the wood of your house and the soil around it, compost piles and foundational wood. They are common throughout the United States, yet are quite scarce in colder states. Since these bugs need protection of tiny spaces and moisture to live, they build a system of pencil-thick tubes and tunnels of earth and mud across exposed areas. And typically, they do much more harm to your home than drywood. IMPORTANT When you change your lodgings, you should check all movable wooden objects thoroughly. As far as drywood termites can live without soil contact, they’re often carried in infested furniture or other wooden objects into such geographical areas where they aren’t normally found. Drywood Termite Treatment & Control Now that you have defined the type of the pests inhabiting your home and their locations, it’s time to get rid of them. Of course, there are two ways of doing this – chemical and natural/organic – but since most people opt for safer way of extermination (i.e. without chemicals), our pieces of advice will focus just on it. Here are the methods one can resort to: Orange oil for termites controlOrange oil. It’s an extract which is obtained from orange peels and is insoluble in water. It’s not intended for internal use, as it will cause severe stomach upset; even its spills are usually irritating to both skin and eyes, therefore, take adequate precautions. Orange oil owes its effectiveness to the active ingredient D-Limonene that proved to eradicate a great variety of insects, dissolving their exoskeleton and destroying their cell membranes, thus leading to insects’ death. Drill small holes into the infested wooden item and inject the oil into the hollow spaces (i.e. where the bugs are feeding). It’ll yield results within 3 days or 3 weeks, depending on severeness of the infestation. Cost: about $3/oz. Microwaves. To get rid of termites in wood one may use microwaves. Portable devices are available. The efficacy of this method is 90%, depending on treatment time and detection accuracy. 1-2 feet of wooden board requires 10 to 30 minute treatment time. And it isn’t necessary to drill holes. Cost: depends on where you live and whether you buy or rent it. Electrocution. You can electrocute the insects with the help of portable electric devices. It isn’t necessary to drill holes but when holes are drilled, eradication might be more effective. Cost: depends on where you live and whether you buy or rent it. Sunlight. If possible, remove the affected item from your home and expose it to sunlight. The light and heat from the sun is sure to kill “the invaders” because they like darkness. On a sunny day, take the item outside and leave it there for 2-3 days (or as long as possible). Cost: free of charge.

WARNING The surface of wood and some other sensitive items (e.g. plastic outlet covers) may get damaged by the devices that generate microwaves. Test the infested item before carrying out this procedure.

No matter which method you choose, it is necessary to make periodic checks and repeat the procedure to eliminate reinfestation. You may also paint wood – the insects won’t enter through painted surfaces. Subterranean Termite Treatment There are three ways of doing it: Beneficial nematodes for termite treatmentBeneficial nematodes. These are very small unsegmented worm species which search for hosts, like termites, and burrow into them, causing death within approximately 48 hours. Spray the nematodes into the yard and infested rooms. That’s all you need to do. They are not harmful to humans, plants or pets, and are able to kill the entire insect colony. Beneficial nematodes can be bought at your local garden supply/hardware store or online. If you don’t use them immediately after they’re purchased, store the nematodes in a refrigerator. They should be planted after the sunset or in the early morning, since UV light harms them. Cost: about $20 for 1 million nematodes. Boric acid to kill termitesBoric acid. It’s one of the most effective ways to kill the insects. This natural insecticide shuts down their nervous system and dehydrates them. Spray or coat wood with boric acid. Place boric acid bait stations in your garden and/or at home. Check them regularly and replenish with boric acid. This insecticide is toxic when inhaled or ingested, so use gloves and a face mask while working with it, and be sure to keep your children and pets away from the substance. Cost: about $7/oz. Cardboard trap. Termites feed not only on wood but on everything containing cellulose, such as paper and cardboard. Thus, the latter will make an excellent bait for the insects. Take 3-5 sheets of flat cardboard and wet them up. Stack the sheets on one another near the most infested area. When it’s full of bugs, put on gloves, take the trap out and burn it. If necessary, repeat the process for many times. It is not recommended to use this method separately. Combine several methods to achieve better results. Cost: about $0.15/piece. Indian meal mothsWant to find the best Indian meal moths control plan? Find out the most effective tips and make your home free of these flying pantry pests. Have a great desire to get rid of roaches permanently? This link will stop your sufferings from those annoying and disgusting roaches. Investigate how to get rid of mice http://pestkill.org/mice/ in no time and make your home mouse-free. This link is your greatest problem solution. Termite Damage to Drywall Termite damage to drywallDrywall, or sheetrock, is made of two sheets of thick paperboard with gypsum plaster sandwiched in between. Since drywall also contains cellulose, it becomes a potential food source for these pests. You may sometimes notice very faint traces of their tunnels in sheetrock, bits of dirt or fecal pellets. All this is evidence that you have this awful problem on your hands, and you have to address it urgently. Termite Bomb Pesticide foggers are commonly called “bug bombs”. They can be bought at grocery and hardware stores. Termite bombs consist of termiticide, i.e. liquid insecticide, contained in pressurized aerosol cans. A bomb disperses a fog of pesticide into the air which after some time falls to the floor and other exposed surfaces. When the bugs come in contact with this toxic substance, they die. However, these bombs are not recommended for eradicating infestation from an entire house because termiticide doesn’t penetrate wood and doesn’t reach termite nests. Moreover, inhaling or ingesting termiticides is harmful both for people and pets. Home Remedies to Eradicate Termites If the above mentioned methods don’t suit you, you may want to use the following home remedies against these creepy crawlies: Essential oils. Clove bud oil is particularly effective in killing termites. Take a mist sprayer, put the oil into it and spray everything where you think they are living. If you want to prevent their appearance or reinfestation, use vetiver oil. Aloe. This remedy kills the bugs only on contact with aloe. Crush the entire plant into some container and pour enough water to cover the plant. Then, after several hours, strain the liquid and add 5 parts of water to 1 part of aloe into a mist sprayer. Spray it directly on the insects. Sodium chloride. Soak several cotton balls with an organic compound, sodium chloride and a cleaning agent. Then fill these balls in any plastic cover and place in all infested areas. This will kill the pests and stop their recurring. Home termite controlFind out awesome tips you need to know about home termite control. Read this and put the tin lid on your termite trouble. Take effective steps for getting rid of fleas in house. Here are the best preventative tips you need to know. Wood Treatment for Termites There are a several things you can try to prevent or get rid of these cellulose eating bugs. It must be noted that the following goods are chemicals! Bora-Care: wood treatment for termitesProducts with borate (e.g. Bora-Care). Natural borate salt (known as a very effective insecticide) is typically an active ingredient in such products. Speaking of Bora-Care: it’s a low toxicity wood preservative with low environmental impact. It is safe for people and pets, but destructive for insects. It deeply penetrates the wood, thus eliminating the latter as a food source. Bora-Care not only prevents infestations but also kills the existing ones. Cost: depends on size and type of product, about $40-280. Termidor SC for eliminating termites (i.e. Suspended Concentrate). It is a professional product for eliminating termites and protecting your dwelling from future infestations. Termidor is intended for outside use only. It is safe for pets and people when used as directed. Cost: about $60/20 oz. To sum it all up, termites can cause thousands of dollars damage to your home. If you see piles of wings, tiny holes in wood, mounds of insect droppings or mud tubes, you have “unwelcome guests”. Don’t waste time and call a professional, or try some eradication methods described in this article. After you have cleared your home from those pests, don’t forget to maintain your home dry, seal any cracks or crevices in it, and keep firewood off your property in order to prevent reinfestation. Have a good “hunt”!

5 Tips for Picking the Right Smartphone
by Jamie Page Deaton
Smartphones are supposed to make our lives easier. With the right smartphone you can manage e-mails and appointments, get directions, keep track of your workouts and what you eat, shop, share information with friends, listen to music and watch movies. So why is finding the right smartphone so darn confusing?
Lots of people feel stupid when picking a smartphone. Which is the best platform, Android or iPhone? How can you find the best deal on the phone you want when not every cell phone carrier sells or works with all models? How can you avoid paying for minutes or data plans you never use? How can you avoid overage charges? Which phones have features worth skipping and which features are must haves? Do you even need a smartphone or will a regular mobile phone do?
Smartphones aren't cheap (and neither are the plans they sometimes require), so taking the time to do a little research first and figuring out exactly what you need, want, and can do without, is worth it. We'll show you how to narrow down your options, find the right phone, carrier and plan for you so you end up with the right smartphone -- and maybe even some money left in your pocket. With these five tips for picking the right smartphone, you'll be leaving the cell phone store with the right phone and feeling downright...well, smart.

This seems like a pretty silly statement, but the first step in picking the right smartphone is to make sure you actually need one. Smartphones are expensive, and so are the coverage plans they require. It's easy to use more data than your plan allows and wind up with expensive overage charges. Even if you don't go over, you could end up paying for a data plan that you barely use.
So, how do you know if you need a smartphone? Look at how you use your current cell phone. Maybe you only use your phone for talking and the occasional text message. If you already have a GPS system and an MP3 player, you can make do with a regular phone that doesn't offer music or directions. You might not want e-mail on your phone. Getting a smartphone often means having immediate access to work e-mails, social media and the Web. Not everyone wants to be that connected.
On the other hand, think about how you'd like to use your phone. If you hate feeling like you're missing out on the latest tweets, updates from your friends, and news, then a smartphone will probably seem worth it to you. If your job requires you to be connected all the time, providing immediate responses to e-mails and questions, a smartphone makes sense. You may already have an MP3 player and GPS, but having all those features in one handy device can make life easier and less cluttered. Finally, if your lifestyle has a long commute on public transportation, or if you often have a lot of downtime when you're in public, a smartphone can help you pass the time.
Cell phone companies are almost as confusing as the phones they offer. They each have different plans, work with different phone manufacturers and have differing levels of service and coverage. You also have to decide if you're willing to pay as you go with a smartphone, or if you want to be locked into a contract. Having a contract can save you some money, but it means sticking with that cell phone company for years. If you choose the wrong company or plan and sign a contract, you're stuck.
To find the right cell phone company, check out which company has the best coverage where you live. Having a great smartphone is meaningless if you can't connect to the Web or are constantly dropping calls. Look at the coverage maps available at any cell phone carrier's website. In addition to making sure the area you're in has good coverage, make sure the network you want is available in your area. Smartphones tend to work best on the faster 3G and 4G networks. If only a slower network is available in your area, you'll probably want to find another carrier to get the best out of your phone. You should also make sure coverage is good in areas where you frequently travel.
Also check out consumer reviews of the coverage offered by various networks in your area. A cell phone company may have a network in place where you live, but the actual users are the ones that will let you know how strong the signal tends to be, and if calls get dropped. If a carrier seems to have great coverage in your area but actual customers say otherwise, take your business somewhere else. You'll also want to compare the various prices and plans offered by the carriers in your area. Finding the best combination of price and plan is critical for our next tip. Keep reading to find out what it is.
When you're deciding how much to spend on a smartphone you have two costs to consider: the price of the phone and the price of the plan. The price of the phone is a one-time expense. Cell phone companies also tend to offer lots of promotions and discounts, so the phone you want may be cheaper than you think. In some cases, if you sign up for a certain plan, the phone is free. Before setting your heart on a certain phone, make sure its price is in-line with your budget.
In most cases, your smartphone plan will be a bigger expense than your phone. Let's say you had to have a certain phone and you were OK with paying $600 for it with no discounts. The plan for that phone could run for two years, at over $100 a month. You could end up paying four times as much for the plan than the phone.
Before shelling out all that cash each month, think about how you want to use your phone. If you plan using mainly it for talking and texting, with only a little bit of e-mail or web surfing, see if you can find a plan with less data. If you're constantly online and want to download apps, games and movies, you'll want to spring for more data. Other parts of the plan to consider include if unused data, text and talking minutes roll over from month to month, or what the penalty for breaking the contract is. If, for example, you move out of the cell phone carrier's coverage area, you don't want to have to pay hundreds of dollars just to get out of your contract.
For a lot of people, picking the right smartphone is a matter of picking the right operating system. The smartphone's operating system is the platform it uses to run various programs. While they can all pretty much connect you to the Web, e-mail, phone calls and texts, each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Four of the most common operating systems for smartphones today are Apple's iOS, which runs iPhones, Google's Android system, Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Research in Motion's Blackberry OS. Unless you're a technophile, you may not notice differences in how each of these systems operate. What you will notice, however, is the availability of different programs and apps across various platforms.
If you plan on using a lot of apps on your smartphone, you might want to avoid getting a Blackberry. The Blackberry OS is great for using e-mail and Web browsing, but it doesn't have as many apps as other browsers. If you want a lot of apps, an iPhone is your best bet. The Apple app store is the largest in the world. The downside of Apple OS is that it's only available on Apple's iPhones. Android-powered phones are quickly making up ground against Apple where apps are concerned, and the Android operating system is available on a range of phones, making it easier to find one that fits your life exactly. A Windows mobile phone is good to get if you plan on doing a lot of work on your phone. Since it runs a mobile version of Windows, which you may already have running on your computer, it can easily let you see and work on spreadsheets and documents right on your phone.
If you follow these tips, your next smartphone won't be just smart -- it'll be a genius.
altrendo images/Stockbyte/Getty Images
Once you've decided on your phone budget, operating system, carrier and plan, you've got one task left: deciding on a phone. Take your time on this. You may end having the phone for two years, taking it everywhere with you and using it more than any other appliance. You need to make sure the actual phone suits your life.
Check out all the phones the carrier you're going with has in your price range and with the operating system you want. Think about the tasks your planning on using your phone for, and try them out on the demonstration phones in the store. See if the key board is comfortable, and how easy it is to switch between applications. If the phone has a trackball or touchscreen, see if it's easy to use or if you're constantly clicking on the wrong thing. Make sure the phone will fit comfortably in your hand, as well as your pocket or purse. Also make sure you like the look of the phone -- after all, it's going to be your constant accessory. Put the phone to your ear and make sure that's comfortable as well. If you know people who have a phone you're interested in, ask them about it. Also read user reviews online to see if the phone has issues like getting hot after prolonged use, or breaking easily.
Follow these tips and your next smartphone won't be just smart -- it'll be a genius.

Will a 2gb RAM good enough for normal day to day usage of laptops?
Will a 2gb RAM good enough for normal day to day usage of laptops?
Really depends how you define "normal day to day usage" and whether you can find a workaround to whatever you can't do. My normal usage involves visual studio and virtual machines which would probably have a tough time with only 2gb to work with (if not impossible for virtual machines).
My laptop broke a couple weeks ago and i've been using a netbook (1gb single core processor with 2gb of ram) borrowed from my sister since. It can't handle most of what I need it to do, but it does run a program called Teamviewer which allows me to remotely control my desktop computer at home that does do everything I need.
Also, can you change the ram in the laptop? Even if there aren't available slots you could possibly remove the ram in it and install bigger sticks (check that the motherboard can handle it first and make sure the ram is compatible).
For basic web browsing and typing word documents and stuff 2gb should be more than enough unless you're the type to have about 15 youtube videos loaded and ready to play and a couple hundred other tabs. Can also use the task manager to see what your normal ram usage is and to try and estimate what you could do with 2gb. Personally, all my google chrome tabs alone add up to over 2gb of ram, but there's probably a couple hundred tabs open, many of which could be closed. Even with 8gb of ram I still often get low memory warnings from windows that I should close some things. I realize that my normal usage is not the same as most other peoples' lol.
Also consider how long you want this laptop to be able to hold it's own. More ram and processing power now means it's less likely to be sitting on a shelf unused in a year or two (assuming it stays working that long and is put on the shelf due to being outdated and too slow for your needs).

There’s a good chance your next computer won’t have an optical drive (that would be the place on the side of your laptop where you insert discs). For those already immersed in technology, losing the drive is an obvious move. Digital can be just as convenient and allows for thinner, lighter computers.
However, many people still rely on discs for software and media, and, if you’re among their number, ditching the disc can be intimidating. What happens if you have to install software or – worse – recover the operating system?
Relax. Computers without a disc drive aren’t so different. Let’s cover a few simple points that will help you decide if going disc-less is ideal.

for Android offers an awesome way to sync your books across multiple devices, and even your computer. What can be easily overlooked is the fact that most of your reading material is only available while you're online. So if you want to read while you're traveling (or just looking to save some battery by turning off your data connection) it's a good idea to make sure the next books on your reading list are downloaded to your tablet. Here's how:
Step 1: Open the Google Books app and find a title you'd like to read while offline.
Step 2: Press and hold on the book's cover and a new menu will pop up.
Step 3: Choose make available offline.
Screenshot by Nicole Cozma
Step 4: Select other titles you want available in offline mode by pressing the small thumbtack under each book's cover.
Step 5: Once finished, press the Done button in the lower right corner.
Steps 4 and 5. Screenshot by Nicole Cozma
You can see how much space you have available for downloads during the book selection (shown above). And it's OK to pick all titles, as long as you have the space.

The iPhone camera and the megapixel myth
How many megapixels does your phone camera really need? Not as many as some smartphone manufacturers want you to think.
by Karen Haslam | 14 Feb 14
Around the turn of the millennium when digital cameras were first becoming popular megapixels mattered. The average digital camera back in 1999 had less than 2 megapixels (MP), which wouldn't have been enough pixels if you needed to produce a print ready image that filled an A4 page. A 300 dpi image at A4 size would need to measure 2,480 x 3,508 pixels, which is a total of 8,699,840 pixels, or just over 8MP.
These days some compact cameras boast as many as 16MP, while you can get more than 24MP on an SRL. Phone cameras are also packing in the megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S4 offers a 13MP camera, and the Galaxy S5 will offer a 16MP camera. The Sony Xperia Z2 has a 20.7MP camera. But the camera on Apple's flagship iPhone – the iPhone 5s – only offers 8MP. Does this mean that Apple's iPhone camera is worst than other phone cameras that offer more megapixels? The answer is no, and we're going to explain why.
READ: Everything you need to know about Apple's iPhone Camera in iOS 8
Dispelling the megapixel myth
It's wrong to think that the more megapixels your sensor has the better your image will be. Of course that doesn't stop various camera phone and camera manufacturers from promoting their products as superior due to the number of megapixels they have packed in. These manufacturers are hoping to fool you into thinking that the number of pixels has something to do with image quality. People like to see a number that indicates whether something is better so many are being taken in by this ruse.
The number of pixels means nothing if the manufacturer has achieved it by cramming them onto a small sensor, as is the case with many modern camera phones. In some cases, in order to achieve more pixels, manufacturers are making those pixels smaller.
A good camera will have the right amount of pixels for the size of the sensor.
It's the size of the pixels that counts
Rather than make the pixels smaller in order to increase the amount of pixels that can be fitted on the sensor, Apple increased pixel size to 1.5µm (from 1.4µm – those measurements are in micrometers) and kept the pixel count the same by using a 15% larger sensor.
As Apple's Phil Schiller said in the keynote announcing the new iPhone 5s: "Bigger pixels equal better picture". Increasing sensor size and pixel size makes a big difference to low light sensitivity and noise.
Why the camera sensor matters
The sensor is what captures the light and converts what you see into an image, it determines image size, resolution, lo-light performance, depth-of-field, dynamic range, and basically how good your photos look.
The sensor is crucial to image quality - it doesn't matter how many pixels you have if the sensor is inferior. The quality of the image depends on the size of sensor, the number of pixels on it and the size of those pixels.
The size of the sensor also affects what gets recorded on the frame. Smaller sensors crop and capture less of the scene than full frame sensors. As a guide a full frame is the same as a 35mm film frame (36×24 mm). Apple's sensor in the iPhone 5s is 15% larger than that in the iPhone 5.
There are various type of sensor. The iPhone features a CMOS sensor (CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide semiconductor). The iPhone camera sensor has been provided by Sony since the iPhone 4s. Some cameras use a CCD image sensor, but CMOS sensors work more efficiently, require less power and handle high-speed burst modes better, which is why they tend to be used in camera phones. The Galaxy S4 also features a CMOS sensor.
Read about how Apple's iPhone compares to the other phones launched at Mobile World Congress]
Other features in the iPhone 5s camera
As we note above, Apple's flagship iPhone - the iPhone 5s - offers 8MP with each of those measuring 1.5µm pixels, and a larger sensor, but there are other ways in which Apple has improved the camera in the iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 5s has a Æ’/2.2 aperture, this enables it to capture more light than the iPhone 5 (and iPhone 5c camera) with its f/2.4 aperture camera. The combination of this larger image sensor and the larger aperture is a 33% increase in light sensitivity, according to Apple. Because it is more sensitive to light the iPhone 5s can capture brighter images with less noise.
Other improvements that add up to better photos are the Sapphire crystal lens cover; True Tone flash; Backside illumination sensor; Five-element lens; Hybrid IR filter; Autofocus; Tap to focus; and Auto image stabilization.
For example, the True Tone Flash includes an amber light that compensates for white balance and helps you get the best colour temperature for the shot and leads to more realistic skin tones.
Read our photo comparision between the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5.
When more megapixels are bad
As we've established above, there is no point in having more megapixels in a smartphone if those pixels are small and the sensor is poor, but there are additional reasons why you want to avoid camera phones that boast more megapixels.
The more megapixels in your image the more megabytes of space it will take up. If space is already constrained on your smartphone an image that takes up 5MB will be a problem. To get around this your image might be compressed - which means you are losing that extra 'quality' anyway.
If the image is humongous you will may experience frustration when you try to sharing it on Facebook or another social site it will take longer to upload your picture.
When more megapixels are good
The only time when extra pixels on a smartphone camera might be useful is if you might want to crop in on an image to reveal detail in the distance. The extra megapixels will give you a little extra flexibility when it comes to cropping in on your image.
These extra pixels are even more crucial when the camera zoom is poor. Some compact cameras and all DSLRs have optical zooms, which mean that the focal length of the lens increases. Other compacts, and nearly all smartphones have digital zooms. In that case the camera shoots the photo and them crops it in to create the close up.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 10x optical zoom – thanks to which it looks more like a compact camera that a smartphone.
How many megapixels do you need?
Ken Rockwell explains how to figure out how many megapixels you really need. If you want a super-sharp print you really need to be able to print at 300 DPI (dots per inch). He explains that you can calculate how many pixels you need this way:
Long print dimension in inches = 4 x (square root of megapixels)
Long print dimension in centimeters = 10 x (square root of megapixels)
For example, the square root of four (megapixels) is two. 4 x 2 is 8in. Thus the biggest print you can make without losing sharpness as seen through a magnifier from a 4MP camera is 6 x 8in (15x20cm). From a 16MP camera you could go to 12 x 16in (30x45cm).
Following Rockwell's calculations, this means the 8MP iPhone 5s can give you a [square route of 8 is 2.8284: 10 x 2.8284 = 28.28427] 28cm long, or [4 x 2.8 = 11.3136] 11in long shot.
In comparison, a 13MP phone camera could give you [square route of 13 is 3.6055: 10 x 3.6055 = 36.055] 36cm long, or [4 x 3.6055 = 14.422] 14in long reproduction of your shot.
As a point of comparison, the length of an A4 page is 29.7cm or 11.692in, a tiny bit longer than the 8MP shot, but smaller than the 13MP shot. We think it's unlikely anyone will want to print camera-phone photos out at a size bigger than an A4 sheet so 8MP seems quite adequate. (US letter sized paper is 27.94cm, suggesting that the 8MP shot is ideal for that market).
Basically if you want a 10x8in print 5MP is enough. If you want a 14x11in print (or anything bigger) you'll be ok with 7MP. If you are only going to view images on a computer screen then those images only need to be 1MP.
What will the camera be like in the iPhone 6?
There are various rumours about the next iPhone (you can read all theiPhone 6 rumours here).
With regards to the new iPhone 6 camera Sony is said to be providing the front-facing as well as the rear-facing camera sensors for the next iPhone. Previously the front facing Facetime camera was provided by Omnivision and was just 1.2 megapixels.
As for the rear-facing camera, there are reports suggesting that Apple may add a 10-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture to the next iPhone.

How Much Optical Zoom is Needed?
SUMMARY: Do you require a digital camera with 6x optical zoom, or is 2x or 3x enough?
________________________________________
(Note that this tip was written for users of compact, intermediate, and prosumer digital cameras. Digital SLR users can purchase lenses with different zooming capabilities.)
With the plethora of digital camera choices available, one question you may ask is how much optical zoom do you really need for the types of photos you want to take? Purchasing a digital camera with a greater optical zoom distance is more expensive than one with only a 2x or 3x zoom, so this decision can greatly affect your pocketbook.
While there are no hard and fast rules, consider the following suggestions. Realize that even if you need a lesser zoom for most of your photos, there will always be times where a greater zoom may be useful.
* Are you primarily taking photos of friends and family, such as in parties or social situations? If so, a 2x or 3x zoom should be plenty. Just be sure to get up close if you need to record detail of a situation.
* Looking for photos of outdoor scenery, or interested in taking photos of architectural elements in a cityscape? A 5x+ zoom can help you take pictures from further away without sacrificing detail.
* Interested in taking photos of wildlife where you need to stand back to avoid scaring animals away, at sporting events where you may be situated in third level seating, from atop observation decks in large metropolises, or other situations where it will be difficult to get in close to your subject? That 7x+ zoom may be needed to get the photos you want.
Zoom magnifications differ between cameras. While this tip is written as a guide, if you need specifics, read the mm capabilities of a digital camera's lens. The higher the mm, the greater the telephoto capabilities (zooming in) of a particular lens.

Smart TVs: Everything You Need to Know
Wondering whether all those so-called smart TVs are really that smart? Or perhaps you're skeptical about dozens of apps littering the screen when all you want to do is watch TV. Not to worry, we've got the answers to the most frequently asked questions about smart TVs.
1. What is a smart TV?
Originally called "connected TVs," these sets were then branded by companies such as Samsung and LG as "smart TVs." The term has come to denote any television that can be connected to the Internet to access streaming media services and that can run entertainment apps, such as on-demand video-rental services, Internet music stations or Web browsers.
2. Which companies make smart TVs?
Virtually every major TV manufacturer makes a smart TV today, with the trend toward making every set "smart." Budget sets from Chinese makers such as TCL and Hisense offer smart features, including built-in Roku services, while high-end models from Samsung have built-in video cameras, microphones, and voice and gesture recognition. A partial list of the biggest smart TV makers includes Hisense, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Toshiba and Vizio.
7. Aside from apps, do smart TVs have other benefits?
Smart TVs do offer other potential advantages. Because these TVs have built-in computers and an online connection, manufacturers can add other features. Casual games, such as "Angry Birds," are now quite common on smart sets. The games are nowhere near as sophisticated or as compelling as those available on a PlayStation or Xbox console, but they can be addictive.
MORE: Best Android Games
Using a built-in camera or optional video camera accessory, some high-end smart TVs offer video calling services, such as Skype. With more powerful processors, other sets include basic voice recognition for searches and gesture recognition for switching between screens.
8. How does a smart TV compare to set-top boxes like Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast or Fire TV?
You do not need a smart TV to get streaming Netflix movies or YouTube videos on your screen. Many set-top boxes can stream those services and more to an HDTV. The leading models are from Amazon, Apple, Google and Roku.
As an example, the Roku Streaming Stick, just $50, delivers more than 1,000 channels and apps. That includes nearly every major service, as well as hundreds of more-obscure channels, ranging from Kung Fu Theater to Victory Westerns. In fact, Roku offers more options than any other set-top box or any smart TV on the market. So if you don't need to buy a new TV but want smart-TV services, a separate, inexpensive streaming media player is the prudent choice.
Furthermore, if you want your iTunes collection on the big screen, only the Apple TV can deliver that. No smart TVs have an app for iTunes. Chromecast lets you stream content from your computer's Web browser, and Amazon's Fire TV doubles as a basic gaming console.
For more information, see our comparison of Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast, and our review of Amazon Fire TV.
9. Is it better to buy a smart TV or get a cheaper TV and a set-top box?
A smart TV costs around $150 more than a comparable set that lacks smart services. However, that price difference is quickly narrowing, and soon most sets will have smart services built in.
MORE: Set Top Box Buying Guide
The price difference can also be deceiving, because connected services are often just one aspect of higher-end TVs. Usually, smart TVs also include better video processing — in other words, better picture quality — and expanded features, such as more HDMI ports on the back. That means you get more for your money than just an Internet connection and apps.
10. Can my smart TV get hacked or contract a virus?
In theory, the answer is clearly yes. So-called white hat hackers have brought attention to the issue by demonstrating ways to break into a smart TV connected to the Internet and do things like steal passwords and change channels.
At the moment, such hacks are theoretical and have never appeared in the real world (well, not yet). Although smart TVs have a variety of interfaces, most run some version of Linux underneath — a popular operating system that hackers know how to manipulate well.
MORE: 12 More Things You Didn't Know Could Be Hacked
To be safe, avoid doing anything sensitive on a smart TV such as online banking or shopping with a credit card. Smart TVs are simply not as safe as computers.
11. Can a smart TV watch you?
Yes, it can. Information you share on a Facebook app on a TV or when ordering on Amazon or Netflix on the big screen is shared in the same way as when you conduct such business on a PC or a smart phone.
In 2012, computer researchers demonstrated ways to break into particular smart TVs that had built-in video cameras and microphones to eavesdrop on people in their living rooms.
Hackers have broken into connected baby-monitoring cameras in the past. And companies can collect private information about you and your viewing habits from a smart TV. Late in 2013, for example, LG admitted to receiving information about what channels owners were watching even after those users turned on the privacy setting. (LG said that was due to a software bug and that it has since corrected the problem).
12. Can you surf the Web on a smart TV?
Some, but not all, smart TVs will let you go online. It requires a special browser that's not only compatible with all the HTML standards that websites use, but that can also convert and display those sites properly on a big screen.
If you want to be able to surf the Web on your TV, make sure your set has its own browser. Also ask if there's a wireless keyboard option.
13. Can a smart TV get local channels?
Smart TV services and features don't affect a TV's ability to get local stations. If you have cable or satellite service, you will continue to receive the same stations. If you don't have either of those services, you'll still need some sort of Internet connection (DSL or cable) for the smart services and then an HDTV antenna to pull in local, over-the-air broadcasts for free.
At least for now, televisions stations have not followed the lead of radio stations, which stream their live broadcasts online.
14. Can a smart TV replace cable?
Much has been made of so-called "cord cutting," which refers to terminating cable or satellite TV service in favor of paid online services such as Hulu Plus and Netflix. Some networks, such as PBS, also let you watch a limited number of shows for free using an app. You can also use your smart TV to take advantage of these services and cut the cord — with certain provisos.
For example, there are no a la carte options for subscribing to individual TV stations online (yet). So although HBO Go has apps that let subscribers watch its shows on different devices wherever they are, customers still have to have a cable or satellite subscription to HBO. Other networks make the same requirements.
MORE: How to Watch Live TV Online
However, the biggest reason to maintain a cable or satellite TV subscription is so you can watch live sporting events. (There are some apps, such as MLB.com, that stream live sports, but they cost extra and don't include all games.) Otherwise, if your household mainly watches movies, news and the occasional series, a smart TV could help you cut the cord.
15. Does a smart TV need a cable box or broadband?
If you want to continue receiving your current lineup of stations and channels and make use of the smart TV streaming services, the answer is yes. You still need a cable or satellite box to decrypt the stations that TV providers scramble to prevent pirating.
For streaming movies from Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video onto a smart TV, a broadband connection is necessary. In fact, slower DSL speeds can stymie video services like Netflix, although they can be sufficient for streaming music from the likes of Pandora and Spotify.
16. Does a smart TV have a better picture?
Not necessarily. Built-in Wi-Fi and a processor for decompressing video do not directly affect picture quality. However, since manufacturers initially added smart TV features to more-expensive, higher-end (and better-performing) HDTVs, shoppers will find that the picture quality on some smart TVs beats that of lower-priced models without the smarts.

http://grammar.yourdictionary.com What is an adjective?
What Is an Adjective?
The simplest definition of an adjective is that it is a word that describes or clarifies a noun. Adjectives describe nouns by giving some information about an object’s size, shape, age, color, origin or material.
• It’s a big table. (size)
• It’s a round table. (shape)
• It’s an old table. (age)
• It’s a brown table. (color)
• It’s an English table. (origin)
• It’s a wooden table. (material)
• It’s a lovely table. (opinion)
• It’s a broken table. (observation)
• It’s a coffee table. (purpose)
When an item is defined by its purpose, that word is usually not an adjective, but it acts as one in that situation.
• coffee table
• pool hall
• hunting cabin
• baseball player
What Do Adjectives Look Like?
English can be very tricky, so you have to be careful, but a lot of English adjectives end with these suffixes:
• -able/-ible – adorable, invisible, responsible, uncomfortable
• -al – educational, gradual, illegal, nocturnal, viral
• -an – American, Mexican, urban
• -ar – cellular, popular, spectacular, vulgar
• -ent – intelligent, potent, silent, violent
• -ful – harmful, powerful, tasteful, thoughtful
• -ic/-ical – athletic, energetic, magical, scientific
• -ine – bovine, canine, equine, feminine, masculine
• -ile – agile, docile, fertile, virile
• -ive – informative, native, talkative
• -less – careless, endless, homeless, timeless
• -ous – cautious, dangerous, enormous, malodorous
• -some – awesome, handsome, lonesome, wholesome
Many adjectives also end with -y, -ary and -ate, but lots of nouns and adverbs also end with -y, lots of nouns also end with -ary, and lots of nouns and verbs also end with -ate, so be careful with those.
Where Do Adjectives Go in a Sentence?
If you come across a word that ends in -y, -ary or -ate (or any other suffix for that matter), and you want to know whether it’s an adjective or not, just look at where it is and what it’s doing in the sentence. If it comes immediately before a noun, and especially if it comes between an article (a, an, the), a possessive adjective (my, his, her, its, your, our, their), a demonstrative(this, that, these, those) or an amount (some, most, all, a few) and a noun, then it’s probably an adjective.
• The grassy field was wet with dew. – “Grassy” comes between an article (the) and a noun (field), so you know it’s an adjective.
• These are my old trophies. – “Old” comes between a possessive adjective (my) and a noun (trophies), making it an adjective.
• We had a few ordinary days. – “Ordinary” comes between an amount (a few) and a noun (days), so it’s definitely an adjective.
• Did you see that immaculate kitchen? – “Immaculate” comes between a demonstrative (that) and a noun (kitchen), so it must be an adjective.
Adjectives also act as complements. Complements are words that complete the predicate of a sentence when the verb is “be.”
• He is tall.
• We’ve been teachers for five years.
• You were my best friend.
• He was smart, handsome and rich.
As you can see, not all complements are adjectives. In these examples, “tall” and “smart, handsome and rich” are adjectives, but “teachers for five years” and “my best friend” are bothnoun phrases. If the complement is only one word, there’s a good chance it’s an adjective. Also if the complement is a list of words, those are probably also adjectives. If an article (a, an, the) or a possessive (my, his, her, its, your, our, their, mine, his, hers, its, yours, ours, theirs) is involved, it’s a noun phrase.
What’s the Correct Order for Multiple Adjectives?
When you list several adjectives in a row, there’s a specific order they need to be written or spoken. Native speakers of English tend to put them in the correct order naturally, but if you’re learning English, you’ll have to memorize the order. It goes like this:
• Determiner – This means an article (a, an, the), a number or amount, a possessive adjective (my, his, her, its, your, our, their), or a demonstrative (this, that, these, those).
• Observation/Opinion – Beautiful, expensive, gorgeous, broken, delicious, ugly
• Size – Huge, tiny, 4-foot-tall
• Shape – Square, circular, oblong
• Age – 10-year-old, new, antique
• Color – Black, red, blue-green
• Origin – Roman, English, Mongolian
• Material – Silk, silver, plastic, wooden
• Qualifier – A noun or verb acting as adjective
This is the correct order for adjectives that come directly before a noun, and they are separated by commas.
• My beautiful, big, circular, antique, brown, English, wooden coffee table was broken in the move.
If the adjectives come after the verb “be” as the complement, then the qualifier will stick with the noun at the beginning of the sentence. The adjectives in the complement are separated by commas with the final two being separated by “and.” For example, My coffee table is beautiful, big, circular, antique, brown, English and wooden.

Is 8 Megapixels Still Enough for the iphone 6 camera ?
Is 8 Megapixels Still Enough for the iphone 6 camera ?
Like clockwork, the anti-Apple brigades are out there poking fun at the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus after last week’s unveiling.
Most of what I’ve personally seen and heard is either half-truths or just people who, for some reason another, feel they need to defend their Android love. But the Android phone creators would love to get the amount of traffic and attention that Apple did just on its keynote and iPhone 6 “pre-order” day. It’s the type of traffic that downs even the cellphone carrier websites. That’s a lot of traffic.
While many can take a step back and laugh, downing websites because you can’t sell a product fast enough and so many people are attempting to buy it … that’s a really good problem to have.
But there’s one criticism of the new iPhone 6 that I actually think is quite funny: the camera still has “only” 8 megapixels.
Why is it funny to me? Like Mac vs. PC, iPod vs. “iPod killers” (of which none were), and iPhone vs. Android, all the arguments tend to be the same. But like the other arguments, this isn’t simply a specs race. It’s quality over quantity.
The megapixel arms race actually took place among DSLR cameras a few years back. DSLRs started gaining more megapixels, and then a furious push of DSLRs with higher and higher megapixels came out, and the reviewers had to cry foul. Why? Megapixels aren’t the only thing that make for a great image.
There are several aspects that contribute to make a great image, such as sensor size and quality, lens, lighting, etc. So DSLR manufacturers pretty much stopped just increasing megapixels, and focused on sensor size and quality.
The same thing is being repeated on smartphones. The simple take is…If you pack more pixels on the same size chip, it can reduce quality and create noise. In fact, other phones are touting up to 16 megapixel cameras, which creates larger images that take up more valuable storage space without truly increasing quality. A bigger and higher quality sensor is more important than megapixels alone. So Apple has focused on this – quality vs. quantity when it comes to the megapixel balance with the appropriate image sensor.
That’s not to say the megapixels and the sensor are inadequate on Android or Windows smartphones. Other current smartphones take great shots, with each able to accomplish different things with different features.
The main point here is that the argument against the megapixels on the iPhone doesn’t matter. Quality matters.
What will the next Megapixel push be?
Megapixel counts really only come into play if you’re looking to enlarge the photo or make larger prints. With 8 megapixels, you can print images up to 20×30” and still get excellent quality prints. Upgrading solely by only two or four megapixels isn’t worth it in most cases, unless you’re also gaining an improved sensor.
If Apple follows that line of thinking with the iPhone, then the next shift in features would make the future change only worth it if they make a significant increase in megapixels (from 8MP to 16MP, for example) PLUS… and it’s a big plus, increase the sensor size so as not to impact image quality.
